Student Union

Amid the vivacious nature of the student activities, the student union is one of the most prominent in STEM October’s everyday routine. The 7-member committee is utterly elected according to the ministry of education conventional election scheme. Once they are elected in early October, a series of duties are delegated to these helpful students: occasional meetings with the high board, surveys coordination and student data collection, campus events, fairs and picnics organization, and communication with STEM unit. The student government this year 2018-2019 has assembled some leaders who have delivered a sense of giving back, commitment and spirit through the school year. Cited below is the thorough efforts portrayed in their work:

Organized Intel ISEF science fair 2019 filtration.
Fund raised and organized the school’s Fun day.
Devised URT practice test trials and eventually was implemented.
Lead serious discussions with Mr. Reda Mansour and Mr. Ali Koriem regarding the 200-scholarship agreements.
Organized trips to the GUC, AAST and E-JUST.

School Events

The German Teacher Day “Deutsch Lehrer Tag,” November 24th, 2014

Overview

The event was held by “Goethe Institute in Cairo” in association with the ministry of education. It was completely organized by STEM October students who showed their ability to organize such a colossal event. The October Students Union was responsible for preparing for the day.

It was remarkably the first time for this event to be held in a school here in Egypt. The event’s day had many activities for the attendees including workshops and sessions given by Goethe trainers to the 411 Egyptian German language teachers, free time for the attendees to share experiences with themselves and their trainers, musical performances, and talks given by October students for the attendees to introduce the school.

Theme

The event was held mainly to celebrate the German teachers’ day and to give the opportunity for exchanging experience, communication, and creating ideas. The event aimed also to create workshops to introduce the attendees to a new modern way for teaching German and to share some activities of Goethe institute in Cairo and STEM October.

Attendees

The event was attended by the German ambassador in Egypt, Goethe institute manager in the Middle East and North Africa, Goethe institute manager in Cairo, and dean of the Alsun Faculty, Ain Shams University. The event was a very big one with about 411 German teachers, Goethe institute trainers, many German students from Helwan University and Ain Shams University.

Attendees Feedback

The general feedback from all the attendees was positive; everyone enjoyed the event and said that he really benefited from the experience. Moreover, the VIP’s gave a very positive feedback on the event and the organizers. The German ambassador showed his appreciation to the STEM October students’ talks and offered the school a place in a program called “Schools: Partners for the Future” (PASCH). In addition, the dean of the Alsun Faculty, Ain Shams University commended STEM October students for their activities - presented in their talks – and also said that such students are better than some professors in his opinion.

Local Hack Day, December 2nd, 2017

Overview

MLH’s Local Hack Day is a global hackathon for learning, building, and sharing. It introduces students who are passionate and curious about technology to an environment full of excitement and competition. In 2017, The event brought out more than 6,000 participants across 34 countries and 236 cities around the world.

For the first time ever, the Local Hack Day was brought to the Egyptian STEM community on December 2, 2017 in STEM 6th October High School for Boys. It was under the supervision of John William, current Student Council President. The main sponsor was Al Watania Technologies. About 100 attendees from STEM community participated in the event.

Event Day

The Hack Day contained professional sessions given by expert speakers: IOT (Internet Of Things) session, IT (Information Technology) given by one of Microsoft staff, Game development, and Web Technology. The sessions were held in STEM 6th October High School’s labs, including Fab Lab, Electronics Lab, Multimedia Lab, and Robotics Lab. The STEM 6th October students also organized competitions, aiming to motivate the sense of innovation and curiosity for the students, these competitions were: Problem Solving Contest, Robots Race, and Hunt Your Treasure. In the Problem Solving Contest, students competed to solve different challenges using algorithm and coding. In the Robots Race, students in teams designed their own robots and programmed them to participate in a fascinating race. Lastly for the Hunt Your Treasure competition, students got into a mission of searching for a QR code in the school area using their mobile phones.

Participants Feedback

The feedback was positive and constructive from both the attendees and the speakers. The speakers demonstrated how fascinated they were by the interactivity and passion of STEM 6th October students as they gave them those sessions and noticed their cooperation to manage the day. The attendees were satisfied with the outcome of the day, they said that they had the chance to engage in technology and get to work by their own in a competitive environment. In the end, we can say that it was a STEM day by every literal sense.

Local Hack Day, December 1st, 2018

Overview

For the second year, the Local Hack Day was brought again to the Egyptian STEM community on December 1st, 2018 in STEM 6th October High School for Boys. The Hack Day this time assembled workshops on “Google Assistant,” cybersecurity, embedded systems, machine learning (AI), and game development. Names from IEEE Helwan Student Branch to GDG and flutter attended the day.

Event Day

The workshops were held in STEM 6th October High School’s labs, including Fab Lab, Electronics Lab, Multimedia Lab, and Robotics Lab. At the end of the day, every workshop hosted a competition to prove participants’ comprehension and give them some sense of hands-on experience. First Lego League school team’s lead was there to host a quick session of how to use Lego pieces optimally, so that by the end of the session the team involved built a fully functional robot. The attendance this year was extraordinary, people who signed up for tickets are about 500, 250 of which showed up. This is a 250% increase from 2017’s 100-attendee. Meanwhile, the social media reach was 13.1k.

The feedback was positive and constructive from both the attendees and the workshop hosts/hostesses. The hosts demonstrated how fascinated they were by the interactive attendance and passion of STEM 6th October organizing team who showed their cooperation in organizing the day. The attendees were satisfied with the outcome of the day and reflected on how vibrant the workshops and the closing ceremony were with respect to 2017’s event.

“University of Rochester’s visit,” April 8th, 2018

Overview

The event was held by STEM October students and counselor. The school hosted Jonathan Burdick, Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the University of Rochester at the time. It was a school day in STEM October as students attended their sessions normally before and after the event.

On the day, Mr. Burdick had an inclusive campus tour where he got to personally see the school’s library, laboratories, and class rooms. He was also introduced to the October students’ achievements including test scores, prizes, international competitions, etc.… Throughout the day, Mr. Burdick was accompanied by two STEM October students who were accepted to the University of Rochester’s class of 2022.

Besides, Mr. Burdick gave a 40-minutes talk where he gave a positive feedback on the school, introduced the University of Rochester in details, and answered many students’ questions.

After the talk, Mr. Burdick was further introduced to the school’s environment by taking a look on the ongoing sessions at the class rooms and laboratories.

The Visitor's Feedback

In his talk, Jonathan Burdick, Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid in the University of Rochester at the time, gave a very positive feedback on what he had seen at STEM October’s campus.

“I feel like you’re very lucky to be here” said Mr. Burdick to the STEM students listening to his talk, “I’ve been learning a bit about the problem-based learning approach that’s going on here, and I find it fascinating because I think it is the wave of Future.”

“There are lots of people all over the world trying to figure out the right way to approach education, and I think one of the answers is already found right here.” Mr. Burdick added.

STEM-MUN Conference, 2019

Overview

For the first time ever in STEM community, under the leadership of Abdullah El-Shenawy, and with the collaboration of 4 different STEM schools (October, Maadi, Obour, and Ismailia), the first ever STEM model united nation was held. Firstly, for the delegates’ form, more than 120 persons from all STEM schools in Egypt had applied to take 1 of 22 seats in the conference. After filtration and interviews, the delegates were chosen and begun their sessions, which are some pre-sessions to inform them about what the UN is, and to let them know more about the topic, the day-organization, and how the conference will move on. The main topic of the conference was the Yemeni civil war, as 22 delegates standing for 22 countries discussed and debated to reach a resolution for the issue.

The Conference Day

The day started with the opening speech, describing what STEM MUN represents. Then, an opening speech for every delegate was made. After that, they went through many debates in order to create a resolution to solve the Yemeni civil war. Finally, different resolutions were made and one of them was selected by the votes of the delegates under the supervision of the chairperson.

In the closing ceremony, certificates were given to the team hard-working members and to all of the delegates.

The best delegates were chosen from among the others and were given special certificates and different awards.

Feedback

The reviews on the conference were outstanding, starting from the guests (Dr. Reda El-Sherbiny, the principal of STEM October; Mrs. Doaa Ragab, counselor of STEM October; MR. Muhammed Abd El-Tawab, IT supervisor); as they confessed their admiration with the delegates and the organization of the day, ending with the delegates and the team members who showed great success in keeping the event brimming with life and describing how it skyrocketed their love for debating and discussing the common good for different countries and the whole world.

Biology Group

Vision

Creating a biology-passionate community for the students, who have that deep desire to break new grounds in the science of life. We aim to change the student’s perspective on biology through multiple activities besides helping students who find it daunting to deal with biology.

Mission

Fostering the passion for biology in all the students. Grooming our members for biology competitions, e.g., national and international biology Olympiad, Brain Bee. Also, encouraging them to draft their own biological researches.

Help students study biology.
Change the student's prespective for biology.
Draft and publish biological researhces.
Gain medals and achieve the first places in all biology competitions.

What we do

We organize various activities in order to fulfil our vision for instance:

Evening sessions: we hold an evening sessions every two weeks for the students, who got a problem with biology and find it confusing.
Study groups: we Make a study groups, in order to prepare to the competitions, e.g., international biology Olympiad.
Research papers: we encourage our members to start their own research papers and participate in competitions, ISEF.
Biology group Magazine: every month we get our biology magazine published through, sending it by mail to all 10,11, and 12 graders.

Mathematics Club

Vision

Providing an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge in Mathematics and to interact with their peers who have the same interest. Moreover, to increase the awareness of students to the relevance of Mathematics to students’ everyday-lives.

Mission

Allow students to cultivate their interest in Mathematics in an informal environment, away from stressing over grades. This will help provide a supportive learning environment in which students can develop their problem-solving skills to the maximum. Moreover, to engage students in significant independent research experiences and explore interdisciplinary applications of Mathematics.

Aims

To present the study of Mathematics in a new way.
To develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to pursue further studies in Mathematics.
To provide competitive participants in Mathematics-related competitions with essential skills.
Aiding the students who are looking forward to pursuing Mathematics as a major to be competitive applicants.
Developing abstract, logical, and critical thinking of students as well as the ability to reflect critically upon their work and the work of others.

Physics Club

Vision

To build a foundation for excellence in physics. encourage the students by igniting and promoting their enthusiasm, interests and passion, in the study of physics and know how nature works, in extracurricular studies in the practical and theoretical physics.

Mission

Improve our cogitation about physics by elaborating our understanding of the mathematical physics to be able to participate in international physics competitions as IAAC and IPHO.

Getting prepared for the hardest physics competitions to win the top ranks.

What we do

We organize verity of activities in order to fulfil our vision and accomplish our aim for instance:

Evening sessions: we gather once a week to have test to test our thinking about the topic that we agreed to study in the previous week's meeting.
Study groups: we Make a study groups, to help each other during the weekly study.
Competing in international competitions: we prepare and help the students to participate in international physics competitions like IPHO, Beam line competition, and international astronomy and astrophysics competition
Physics club Magazine: every 3 months we present our work, physics history, and latest news in the physics field in a magazine, and each magazine issue is featured in the school library after publication.

Chemistry Group

“Aiming at improving student’s understanding of chemistry and evolving their skills to the maximum”

Vision

Introducing Chemistry as a matter of controversy by encouraging students to discuss freely to enhance their critical thinking skills. Also, aiming to change the way chemistry-related topics are addressed by discussing them innovatively. This is implemented by explaining famous phenomena from the view of chemists and relating it to other fields of science, making room for a clear atmosphere for discussion and competition.

Mission

Forming a group of students who are interested in Chemistry in general. Their main aim is to form an interactive, exciting, and efficient method for studying Chemistry; accordingly, enhancing their understanding. Moreover, the group introduce various concepts whether they are discussed in the curriculum or not, as an enlightening method to explore various fields of Chemistry.

Presenting the study of Chemistry in a new way:
- Encouraging experiment-based learning, debates, and open discussions.
- Conducting and simulating notable experiments on which some important laws of Chemistry were based.

Hack Club

What is Hack Club?

Hack Club is a nonprofit network of computer science clubs, where members learn to code and to solve problems through tinkering and building projects. Globally, it is founded in 221 schools, 35 states, and 15 countries!

Vision

The goal of Hack Club is to help its members become “hackers”. We want a space at every school where people are making interesting things with code every week. Schools don’t provide that, so we’re creating it in every school to make building things accessible to everyone.

Mission

Hack Clubs are student-led groups dedicated to:

Spreading the computer science in high schools.
Spreading coding and programming skills.
Spreading problem-solving skills.

Aims

spread awareness of the existing advanced technologies
enhance teens’ problem-solving and analysis skills
help them present their ideas clearly and objectively
Guide teens in the path of learning the required computer science skills through workshops, sessions, and hackathons.

What we do

In sessions, hackathons, and workshops, students learn to code through building real-world projects like websites, apps, and games. We also offer them what’s so called “problem sets” so that they solve challenging problems that enlighten their minds.

English Conversation Club

“You might be familiar with clubs where mathematics and physics are the main points of interest. Nevertheless, here in the English conversation club, we are mostly keen on helping each other¬–the students–to practice our English freely.”

Vision

In a world where English has become the universal language, our aim is to assist students to practice their speaking skills, introducing various methods of learning and exercising, and increasing the students’ fluency in English by competing in challenges. In turn, they can become active members of any diverse society.

Mission

Helping the students to surpass themselves in speaking English and overcome their fears of talking in public or presenting in front of a large group of people. Also, sharing the aesthetic of the most common language in the world among the students.

Aims

To aid the students to communicate in English fluently without stuttering or mishaps and to think in a foreign language easily rather than translating every word meditatively.
To facilitate the interviewing process by training the members, providing tips and tricks on decreasing stress, and discussing the precision of using words.
To acquaint the members with the criteria of speaking sections in English proficiency tests, helping the students to ace them.

Program

Arranging sessions that contain general discussions about random topics that allow the students to practice. Also, providing speaking content like idioms, phrases, or catchphrases.
Simulating Academic and work-related interviews that will foster the capability of mastering them under several circumstances.
Simulating TOEFL and IELTS speaking tests to accomplish the aforementioned purpose.
Delivering presentations to illustrate specific topics like (How to maintain conventional presentation skills, Colors effect on the human mind, Phonetics basics, etc.). Also, assigning the members to make their own presentations to discuss and share their interests in English with the others.

Economics Club

Vision

Having a well-taught community about economics, one of the most useful fields nowadays. Since our school does not provide economic courses the economics club is there for students to find their hidden passion towards it.

Mission

The club’s purpose is to lay the groundwork for future economic careers by teaching members basic economic concepts. Students will also be well-prepared to go through discussions about real-life economic issues.

Aim

Finish each season with the majority of the members having a strong incentive to study economics in the future.
Get the members ready for the AP Microeconomics exam.
Have all the members prepared to debate about current economic issues based on economic concepts.

What we do

The main activity of the club is holding sessions to teach microeconomics, starting from the basic ideas of limited resources and scarcity reaching market failure and the role of government. Other activities are:

Making biweekly debates about the topics we’ve discussed before.
Watching “Crash Course Economics” videos.
Organizing an event at the end of the season – hosting a local speaker.

Mirus

What is Mirus?

A local, aspiring student organization marking the initiation an independent designing team, by providing quality media solutions for high-schoolers and college students while laying down the bases for a novel business entrepreneurship project.

Using social media, public websites and our own website, we publish different designs and show everyone our work. As well as creating partnerships with different organizations to provide them with designs, we offer different ornate garments of our making to the store.

Vision

Fostering talented youth designers, and editors and developing a friendly atmosphere for skill growth. After facing acclaims from school counselors, our organization is targeting to become a well-esteemed designing team with talented members around high-schools and colleges.

STEM-MUN

Vision

Society of Politically well-informed STEM-students able to communicate and work out potential solution for the world’s ongoing problems.

Mission

Spreading political awareness among the Egyptian STEM-students’ community and having them informed about the world issues. Fostering their debating skills and enhancing their understanding for international relations.

What we do

Each season a new generation of delegates is chosen, mostly from STEM high scholars in Egypt. They receive intensive weekly sessions for a month, covering what is the UN and how it functions followed by the explanation for a selected global issue for the season. During these sessions, the delegates become well informed about the topic in hand and acquire a variety of skills including, debating, public speaking, researching, and analyzing. Afterwards a conference is held in which the delegates began to debate the problem from their own research and work towards coming up with an effective resolution to address the issue.
